The Gleneagles Townhouse is delighted to present “Visual Ticks” by Scottish artist Suzanne Taylor, in a collection of hand-crafted
collages which present a subversive view of vintage ephemera.
Initially these collages were an attempt to formulate ideas as a prerequisite for paintings. A visual sketch using ready-made images from countless hours spent in second hand bookstores. Many artists have used this technique from Robert Rauschenberg to artists whom I greatly admire, such as Adrian Ghenie. Such artists have used collage to initiate a visual language, which could encapsulate an idea, which linguistically or conceptually could not be born any other way.
These ideas were palimpsests of memories, cognitions, visual ticks, which were juxtaposed to each other but found coexistence through their proximity but maybe not their domain. A visual oxymoron with uncanny tendencies.
These initial vignettes slowly took form and became their own entities. Demanding no explanation for their own existence and therefore the conversation developed into a non-linear visual rupture of contrasting elements. These elements sit uncannily together either by virtue of their opposition to one another, their seemingly random marriage (such as the collage of a carefree dancer flying through the symbolic kitchen of 1950’s female servitude). Or the enormous bear growling at the carefree skier on the chair lift. In this scene we see a play on scale, with the elements of size and disruption on various characters.
The work encompasses themes of femininity, sexuality, consumption and climate change. It is also a wink to the glamour years and the nostalgic innocence of the pre-digital lexicon.
